Periocular wrinkle volume −31.6%
Split-face randomized controlled trial, 660 nm, ten sessions over four weeks at 3.8 J/cm². Wrinkle volume fell by roughly a third — the strongest facial-rejuvenation result in the literature.

Surface glow and deep renewal
The best-supported use of red light. Trials show ~30% periocular wrinkle-volume reduction, improved complexion and collagen density; head-to-head, no single red wavelength has beaten another — consistency of use is what the trials reward.

Blue light reliably entrains the circadian system and lifts alertness — through the eyes. The measured melatonin-suppression peak is ~485 nm, with 460 nm well inside the responsive window. If you have melasma or pigmentation concerns, skip facial blue sessions — blue light can worsen pigmentation in darker skin tones.

Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by cytochrome-c oxidase in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, lifting ATP output and switching on repair signalling. Five decades of literature; not fringe.

No oncologic signal
A systematic review of clinical and preclinical evidence found photobiomodulation within established parameters does not induce dysplasia and shows no adverse oncologic signal.

Dose-escalation trials established wide safety margins — and that darker skin is more photosensitive, not less. Blue (460 nm) facial sessions carry a hyperpigmentation risk for melasma-prone and Fitzpatrick III+ skin.

The near-infrared emitters are invisible and trigger no blink reflex; blue light carries retinal phototoxicity risk. Repeated low-level red light shows a mostly reassuring 3-year eye-safety record — with isolated OCT changes reported. Eye protection is the reasonable standard.

20 structured PubMed queries plus 18 targeted follow-ups returned 1,227 unique records. From these, 47 studies were curated — 18 randomized controlled trials, 14 systematic reviews or meta-analyses, 15 mechanistic, dosimetric or regulatory sources — each annotated to the product claim it bears on. Regulatory status was checked against the openFDA 510(k) database. Citations were verified against the source papers; where a study’s finding is a null result, it is listed as one.
